During this COVID- 19 pandemic Shaun Branch Master Thatcher Ltd will continue all business activities in a safe and efficient way. We continue to work within government regulations and will be monitoring the situation carefully.

Shaun has just replaced the ridge on my cottage. He was always very professional, kept to the timescale initially given, cleaned up the area around the cottage at the end of every day and, most importantly, did a superb job! Every day neighbours in the village are coming up to say how good the new ridge looks. Shaun (and Holly, his lovely spaniel) were a pleasure to have working on the cottage. I would unreservedly recommend Shaun and will definitely be asking him to fit the re-thatch of the cottage into his schedule when it is due.

Shaun re-thatched the front of our cottage, replaced the ridge and cleaned the rear thatch all during the hottest Summer of recent memory. He always worked hard, even during the blistering heart, and was always friendly.

He started the work exactly when he said he would, and the work he did was excellent and he showed great care in all his activities. The thatch is now looking lovely and we have had many compliments from neighbours and people passing by.

It was particularly pleasing that Shaun thatched our cottage as an apprentice when we first moved here over 25 years ago, so it was lovely to see the thatch being kept in good working order by the same people.

We would definitely recommend Shaun and will use him again when we need any more work done.

Kates Cottage needed the ridge, both half-hips and the front re-thatching in combed wheat reed. Shaun's quotation was the most competitive and his early availability was also timely as part of the thatch above one of the windows was beginning to collapse. He started promptly after New Year and braved some freezing weather to complete the work on time, on budget and to a very high quality.

The scaffolding was erected efficiently without damage to walls or other roofs and the work began consistently and methodically.

Shaun is amicable, diligent and also innovative when needed eg erecting a sheltered area under the tarpaulin to continue during rain showers. The final result is excellent and admired by anyone walking past. After the completion Shaun cleared up thoroughly including cleaning a couple of hard to reach veluxes for good measure.

Highly recommended.

Shaun Branch was employed by the Ewelme Village Hall Management Committee to re-thatch the roof of the Victorian Reading Room that adjoins the slightly more modern Village Hall. As a committee we wanted to wait until the last possible moment to replace the thatch and that time came shortly before Christmas 2015 when there was a severe chance of water coming through the remaining - rather thin - thatch.

The scaffolding was erected and Shaun started by delivering the new thatch and removing the very tired thatch to the rear of the Reading Room. He was a reliably solid worker who braved all the elements known to man – high winds, pouring rain and very cold temperatures. He remained cheerful and always approachable. When the back was completed he turned his attention to the front which is alongside the main road through the village. He worked smoothly and well and I only wish I had been given a fiver when stopped by passers-by who told me what an excellent job Shaun was making of the Reading Room!

His attention to detail with the ridge and the general finishing touches were good to see and the finished article is brilliant. Thank you Shaun. He even managed to cope with invoices being paid by the Management Committee (two thirds of the final bill) and the Parish Council who had been saving £1000 a year for 7 years in the ‘thatch fund’.

When our thatch needs tidying or replacing in future years, we know who to call upon – Shaun Branch the Master Thatcher!

Peter Lemaire, Chairman of the Village Hall and the Parish Council.

Our cottage stands up and looks taller now that it has been so beautifully and expertly re thatched. Our old roof had been sorely neglected by previous owners and also over thatched, and the weight had caused it to drop over the upstairs windows preventing them opening. We had originally booked a complete re-thatch for the 3 months March – May 2015 but Shaun was able to begin early, so the scaffold arrived at the beginning of December 2014. Shaun had arranged all the necessary permissions, and as we are located directly on a public footpath, ensured that all was safe for the daily school run of mums and primary age children.

The process became quite a discussion point, as did Shaun’s spaniel, as she patrolled the scaffold and fascinated the passers-by underneath, especially the children on the school run. We were amazed at how quickly the process commenced, and by Christmas a quarter of the roof had been completely replaced. We received compliments galore from friends and neighbours on the speed, quality and tidiness of the work which we wholeheartedly endorse ourselves too.

Shaun worked in all weathers and all the daylight hours available, and despite a mini straw avalanche due to some very old and rotting straw, the whole roof was completed before it had originally been due to start! We have a stunning new roof which has been photographed by many, and admired by everyone who passes or visits.

We cannot praise the craftsmanship and quality of the work highly enough, and are more than happy for our roof to be shown as an example of Shaun’s work, to show just what a complete transformation his skill and expertise can bring to a property.

This is the first time we have lived in a thatched house and we had no idea about how to look after the roof. This is why we called Shaun in the first place - to come round and give us his opinion. Straight away he could see that the ridge was in need of replacing and would not survive the coming winter. We then decided that, while the ridge was being done, we may as well completely re-thatch one side and have some maintenance on the other to ensure the roof was good for the next 10 - 15 years. Shaun did not try to convince us either away about the work that needed doing, he just gave his informed opinion without any hard sell or dramatic scare tactics!! It was entirely up to us what we decided to do and we felt no pressure either way which is how we like to do business!!!

The work started just a couple of months later (and two months earlier than we had expected) and it was all done to the highest level. He brought all the materials round and stacked them in the garden covering them neatly until they were needed. Shaun worked tirelessly to get the job done as quickly as was possible despite some pretty horrid weather conditions on some occasions. The whole job was done efficiently and for the exact amount quoted to us - literally not a penny more. The roof looks fantastic and neighbours have commented on what a good job has been done.

Above all, we know we are safe and protected from whatever the weather throws at us. If we need any work doing on the roof in future, we will have no hesitation in calling Shaun - we have no complaints and would recommend him to anyone. Apart from anything else, he is a pleasure to have dealings with (and has a lovely dog!) and we trust him which is the most important thing for us. It is so nice dealing with an individual as opposed to a big faceless corporation and with someone who actually answers the phone when you call. He wants to do the best he can for his clients and we look forward to seeing him again in the future (and his dog obviously!).

Shaun replaced the ridge and cleaned and repaired the main thatch on my mother’s cottage in the spring of 2015. He was always polite, friendly and worked long hard days.

It was a delight to watch his thatching skills and his work was much admired by the villagers. The new ridge had Shaun’s own attractive design and the main thatch looked like new.

His companion, his obedient spaniel, Holly, was also a pleasure to see and an added bonus.

We used Shaun to re-ridge and carry out some general repairs to our thatch in Spring 2013. Right from our first meeting we were impressed with his professionalism and passion for what he does, his quote was also very competitive.

We cannot fault the work he did for us it was excellent, you can tell he takes great pride in it. He is also a genuinely nice person. We would without hesitation recommend Shaun and personally would never look elsewhere for a thatcher.

Shaun has done thatching work for us for over 10 years. He is reliable and hard-working and his work has been consistently of a very high standard. We are always delighted with the finished result and over the years have received many compliments on the excellence of his thatching. He is also a very amiable individual in possession of a very nice dog, which goes on the scaffolding with him!

As new thatch owners we had no idea what to expect when we needed our ridge replaced. Sean made it hassle free and quick with no mess left behind, and that was in the snow! We're very glad we found him.
